A free exhibit with a booking decision inside it
The U.S. Botanic Garden opens Season's Greenings: National Parks and Historic Places on Nov. 26, 2026, and runs it through Jan. 3, 2027. Admission is free. No tickets are required for the Conservatory, the outdoor train display or any other part of the Garden. The booking decision sits elsewhere: which Metro line the room sits on, and which night the party walks through the doors.
The show fills the Conservatory with poinsettias and evergreens and holiday decor. Model trains pass 37 plant-built entries, among them the Grand Canyon landscape, Mount Vernon, the Old Faithful Inn and the Maggie L. Walker National Historic Site. The D.C. landmarks collection returns with the Lincoln Memorial, the U.S. Capitol and the Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial. The run covers 39 days, closed on one of them.
Ride the Orange, Blue or Silver line
The Garden's own directions name one rail station: Federal Center SW. Take the Orange, Blue or Silver line to that station. Exit and walk north along Third Street SW for two blocks. Cross Independence Avenue and continue one more block to Maryland Avenue. The Conservatory entrance sits on Maryland Avenue, with the glass dome visible on the approach to the Capitol.
That is three blocks from the platform. A room on another line adds a second leg to the trip. The line choice is the first thing to settle when the room is picked. Two Metrobus routes serve the door as well. The D10 stops behind the Conservatory at Independence Avenue and First Street SW, and the D1X stops on Independence Avenue SW by Third Street SW.
No lot, and the one street where a car can stop
The Garden keeps no parking lot and no parking spaces of its own. Metered street parking, including accessible spaces, is available within a few blocks. Eight paid accessible meter spaces sit within two blocks of the Conservatory, and the ParkDC meter map marks them.
Rideshare and taxi passengers can be dropped off on Maryland Avenue in front of the accessible paths. Paratransit drivers can use the same point. A group arriving by motorcoach has no place to stop at the Garden: there is no tour bus parking on site, and the Garden routes buses to Parking Lot B at Union Station along a published tour bus route. Wheelchairs are available to borrow on a first-come, first-served basis, including a bariatric chair.
Six nights the gates stay open to 8 p.m.
The Conservatory and the outdoor train display both run 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily across the run. Six evenings extend that close to 8:00 p.m.: Dec. 8, 10, 15, 17, 22 and 29. Those dates are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Live holiday music runs 5 to 8 p.m. on each, with food and drink vendors on site. The train display runs to 8:00 p.m. on those evenings as well.
A late evening changes the room arithmetic. A party that books a dinner and an 8 p.m. walk-through needs the same night in the hotel, and a party that flies home the following morning needs the checkout set one day later. Book the late-night date first, then the room, because the six dates are fixed and the room inventory is not.
What Dec. 25 closes
The Conservatory and the outdoor train display are closed on Dec. 25. The published hours name that as the only closure in the run. A party that lands on Christmas Day still has the Terrace Gardens and the Bartholdi Fountain and Gardens, which open dawn to dusk daily including holidays. Bartholdi sits across Independence Avenue from the Conservatory, with access from Independence Avenue, Washington Avenue or First Street SW.
A guest booking a Christmas-week stay should place the Garden visit on either side of Dec. 25. The Garden prints one further warning for that week: it is busiest on holidays and the weekends around them, and it recommends a weekday visit for a quieter walk.
One morning opens at 10 a.m. for a set reason
Dec. 5 is a Saturday. The gated outdoor gardens open at 10:00 a.m. that day to accommodate the Garden's sensory-friendly programming. The Garden directs visitors to its Accessibility page for the program details. A party with a member who needs a quieter visit should ask the Garden about that morning before fixing the date.
The trains can stop
The outdoor train display may not run during inclement weather. A party travelling for the trains should keep one flexible day and check conditions with the Garden on the morning of the visit. The Conservatory sits on the same grounds and carries no weather condition in its posted hours.
How to hold the rooms
hotelhuddle.com notifies 50 or more hotels in the destination city from one request, drawn from a network of 103,857 hotels. Hotels answer with competing rate quotes in 24 to 72 hours. The request is free to submit, and no commission is added to the booking rate; hotels pay a separate commission on accepted bookings.
Give the request the Garden's fixed dates: the arrival night, the late-evening date if the party wants one, and the Dec. 25 closure. The Garden charges nothing at the door, so the room, the parking and the ride are the whole cost of the trip.
